The BRICS nations, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, are set to convene in Puri, Odisha from June 3-5 to discuss Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
The meeting aims to bring together representatives from 11 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia, to advance a shared agenda on disaster resilience.
Odisha was chosen as the host state due to its globally recognized milestones in disaster preparedness, effective cyclone management, and early warning systems.
Objectives of the Meeting
The deliberations will focus on sustainable DRR financing, resilient infrastructure, anticipatory response, and integrating traditional knowledge into disaster resilience strategies.
The meeting will also provide a platform for delegates, policymakers, and disaster management experts from BRICS member and partner nations to share their experiences and best practices.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will be present at the inaugural event on June 4, marking the importance of the meeting for the state and the nation.
Significance of the Meeting
The meeting is significant as it marks the first in-person technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India's BRICS Presidency.
India had chaired the first technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, held virtually on April 29-30, bringing together member countries to advance a shared agenda on disaster resilience.
The meeting in Puri will provide an opportunity for BRICS nations to strengthen their cooperation and collaboration in the field of disaster risk reduction.
