Editorial Staff

Introduction to the NCRB Report

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released its Crime in India 2024 report, which reveals a decline in the overall crime rate in India compared to 2023. However, there was a significant increase of over 17% in cybercrime cases during the same period.

A total of 1,01,928 cases were registered under cybercrimes in 2024, up from 86,420 cases in the previous year. This surge in cybercrime cases is a cause for concern, with 72.6% of cases being motivated by fraud.

Cybercrime Cases on the Rise

The NCRB report states that 73,987 out of 1,01,928 cases were registered for the motive of fraud, followed by 3,190 cases for sexual exploitation and 2,536 cases for extortion.

These numbers indicate a significant increase in cybercrime activities, with fraud being the primary motive. This trend is expected to continue, with the rise of digital payments and online transactions.

Overall Crime Rate Declines

The NCRB recorded 58.86 lakh cognisable crimes across the country in 2024, marking a 6% decline from the previous year. Of these, 35.44 lakh cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and 23.41 lakh cases under special and local laws.

This decline in the overall crime rate is a positive trend, indicating that law enforcement efforts are yielding results. However, the rise in cybercrime cases is a concern that needs to be addressed.

Crimes Against Scheduled Castes and Tribes

The report revealed that a total of 55,698 cases were registered for crimes against Scheduled Castes (SCs), showing a decrease of 3.6% over 2023. Crimes against Scheduled Tribes also showed a sharp decline of 23.1%, with a total of 9,966 cases in 2024.

These numbers indicate a positive trend, with a decline in crimes against SCs and STs. However, more needs to be done to ensure that these communities are protected and empowered.

Accidental Deaths and Suicides

The NCRB also released the Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024 report, which recorded 1,70,746 suicides in 2024. Those associated with the agriculture sector, the unemployed, and daily wage workers accounted for a substantial share of suicidal deaths.

A total of 10,546 persons involved in the farming sector died by suicide in 2024, accounting for 6.2% of the total suicides. Around 31% of the total suicides were reported among daily wagers.

Conclusion

The NCRB report provides valuable insights into the crime trends in India. While the overall crime rate has declined, the rise in cybercrime cases is a concern that needs to be addressed. The report also highlights the need to protect and empower SCs and STs, and to address the issues of suicides and accidental deaths.

The government and law enforcement agencies must take proactive steps to prevent and investigate cybercrimes, and to ensure that the rights of SCs and STs are protected. Additionally, efforts must be made to address the root causes of suicides and accidental deaths, and to provide support to those affected.
